The average age for women to start undergoing menopause is 50.5 years. Nevertheless, some women begin menopause at a much younger age, especially those who have suffered from cancer or other illnesses having gone through chemotherapy. Some women simply go through menopause early. This is called 'premature menopause,' and generally occurs before a woman turns 40. Its known cause is autoimmune disorders, diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease. During a woman's mid-30's, there is a significant decline in the ovaries' production of hormones, and in the late 40's that process usually accelerates. It is natural for women to experience symptoms of perimenopause for some years before the onset of menopause.
