In vitro fertilization is a procedure where the fertilization of a woman's egg cell takes place outside her womb. She takes some prescribed fertility drugs to stimulate her ovaries, thus producing multiple eggs. The doctor then takes some eggs through laparoscopy and places them in a culture dish along with sperm cells to facilitate the fertilization process.
If fertilization occurs, the embryo is allowed to develop outside the womb for several days and then is implanted in the uterus lining using a small plastic tube, where it will hopefully develop normally. The leftover embryos are frozen, to be used if the first implantation is not successful.
