Infertility in women can be attributed to several causes, such as hormone deficiencies, problems with their reproductive organs, and certain types of health problems. Some medications and complications from some types of surgery can also contribute to female infertility. Some of the more common causes of infertility in women include:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is an infection in the pelvic region or in one or more reproductive organs, such as the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or uterus. It is usually caused by bacterial infection related to a sexually-transmitted disease such as gonorrhea. It may also develop through abortion, extensive use of IUD contraceptive devices, or surgery;
- Polycystic ovary syndrome, in which the ovaries produce higher quantities of male hormones, thus disabling the production of eggs. Instead, the ovarian follicles form cysts that are filled with fluid and can cover the entire ovary;
- Endometriosis, which is a condition where sections of the uterine lining are implanted in the vagina, ovaries, or elsewhere in the pelvis. Such implantations may eventually form cysts that grow with every menstrual cycle. These may turn into blisters or scars that block the passage of the egg.
- Ovary problems
- Hormone problems
- Immune system problems
- Surgical complications
- Premature menopause
- Excessive exercise and stress
