A jab step is a small step towards the opposing player using the non-pivot foot. It depends on the defensive player's reaction. It is used before you do a jump shot or a drive. You can do the jab step by doing the following:
- Establish a proper basketball position by keeping your hand holding the ball at the waist level.
- Take a very small step towards the defensive man, and do a fake dribble bringing the ball closer to the knee level.
- Watch the reaction of the defensive man. If he bends over, push the ball around his hip, take a larger step and then move into a split and stop at the middle. This will be the most effective jab step you can do.
