Every player on a team gets a specific player to guard on the opposing team. Make sure to guard your man close enough to block every attempt to pass or shoot the ball. This is done especially when the player of the opposing team has reached the painted area. The opposing player will have to shoot the ball; that is his goal. The best way to stop the attempt to shoot is to block the opposing player.
You should also guard your man even when he doesn't have the ball. An opposing player may pass the ball to the man you are guarding. Block any of his attempts to catch the ball or you can even catch the ball yourself and shoot it to your side of your court.
