The subject of distance in DSL is very important because it will be a factor in whether the subscriber can even get DSL and if so, what kind of internet speed they can get. There are some rules from telephone companies that must be applied at certain distances:
- If the distance between the provider and the subscriber is less than 5,000 feet, there will be no problem in getting all speeds of DSL.
- If the distance between the provider and the subscriber is 5,000 to 15,000 feet, there will be trouble in getting the highest speed offered.
- When the distance reaches 15,000 to 18,000 feet away from the provider, ADSL is still available although the speed will only reach about 300-500 Kbps.
- Between 22,000 and 28,000 feet away, a user can only use ordinary DSL equipment. But it's still possible to use DSL at this distance.
- At 28,000 feet and above, IDSL is the only choice.
