Exchanging gifts is one of the greatest symbols of Christmas. This is a sign of sharing and giving. The pagans during the early times did it for their fellows who lacked food during the winter months.
It is not really required to exchange gifts at Christmas but it has become part of the Christmas tradition all over the world.
