Christmas stockings are mostly for children. They believe that Santa Claus leaves gifts in their stockings if they hang them up on Christmas Eve.
This idea originally came from Holland, where children were fond of placing wooden shoes near the hearth on December 25 and would find small gifts left in the shoes. From there, the idea migrated to other countries, especially in the 20th century.
