Christmas cards originated in London, England, in the year 1843. The very first Christmas card made in London was designed by John Calcott Horsley. Prior to these cards, people exchanged their greetings through handwritten holiday greetings.
As for sending cards for other holidays, that was mostly invented by the sellers of cards.
