Philanthropy has various definitions. It often refers to a charity, foundation, organization of patronage, or any act that deals with the voluntary promotion of human welfare and the common good. This is usually a non-profit organization with aims of helping the needy.

The word philanthropy itself comes from roots meaning "love of mankind" or "love of fellowmen."
