There are several characteristics you need to be a good and effective volunteer. First, you must have a strong desire to serve others without expecting anything in return. This is probably the most important characteristic you must have in order to be a good volunteer.
Next is your interest. In what field or area of expertise do you want to be deployed as a volunteer? Do you want to be a medical volunteer? An international volunteer? An office volunteer? Your interest will reflect the right opportunity for you.
Your skills are also a plus factor in being a good volunteer. For instance, if you know about carpentry and home-building skills, you can volunteer these skills to charitable organizations that construct housing for poor families. In this way, you have helped others to have their own home and you have helped the organization through reducing their costs in hiring skilled workers.
