Working out causes your body to look for an energy source. In aerobic exercises, such as swimming or jogging, the body uses carbohydrates. In anaerobic exercises, such as weightlifting or push-ups and sit-ups, the body uses carbohydrates in form of glycogen.
This is why, before you workout, you need to eat foods high in carbohydrates, such as rice, whole-grain pasta, bread, and fruits and vegetables. It is important that you should eat only a small, easily digested meal 30 to 40 minutes before starting your workout.
You should also drink a lot of water -- at least 20 ounces 1 to 2 hours before you start working out.
