There is a Santa Claus. The name comes from the Dutch name Sinter Klass, their pronunciation of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was a Christian priest who eventually became a bishop. He was rich and traveled the whole country to help the unfortunate by giving away money and special presents. He remained anonymous while giving gifts by going to the houses of children while they were asleep.
One famous story about St. Nicholas concerned a poor man whose three daughters were getting married. St. Nicholas put gold pieces in their stockings on their wedding day. Since then, children have hung stockings on Christmas Eve, hoping St. Nicholas will leave gifts in them.
Most people believe that St. Nicholas died and went to Heaven to help poor people from there. People in England and France have mostly stopped worshipping St. Nicholas as a saint but see him as a gift-giving father figure called Father Christmas or Pere Noel.
