How do helicopters fly?

The helicopter flies by the lift created by its power-driven rotors. Most helicopters to date have both main and tail rotors. As these rotors spin and cut through the air, lift is produced. Each blade produces the same share of lifting force.
The spinning of the main rotor against the air results in enough lift to allow the helicopter to go upward and hover. By tilting the main rotor, the course of the flight will move toward the direction of the tilt.
The body of the helicopter rotates in the opposite direction from the main rotor, which creates what is called “torque reaction." The tail rotor pulls opposite the torque reaction to hold the helicopter in a straight position.
