Your decision will depend on the severity of the addiction. If the treatment is severe, it may be necessary for treatment to be done inside a treatment facility where the patient will receive 24/7 monitoring away from access to any drugs or alcohol. However, if the addiction is only in its infancy or can be contained by family members, a patient may be treated at home with scheduled visits to the treatment center's psychiatrists and doctors. In out-patient drug or alcohol treatment, it is especially important for family members to cooperate in order to help the patient fully recover from addiction. If strong family support is not available, it is advisable to consider in-patient addiction treatment.
Another factor that can play into the mix is whether or not the patient experiences psychiatric problems. It can be very dangerous for a person with both addiction and psychiatric problems to be treated as an outpatient. In order to ensure their safety, it is highly recommended that you consider getting that person in-patient treatment.
