A Mansard roof slopes on all four sides. Each side is divided into a less steep upper slope and a steeper lower slope. The upper slope is not usually visible from the ground.
This roofing is considered to have practical uses because it permits usable living quarters in the attic. Because of this, older buildings were restructured with mansard roofs. In the United States, it was very popular from the 1860s to 1880s.
