There are different types of roofs that are widely used in home building. These are:

• Asphalt composite shingles - The most popular roofing type in the United States. The shingles are made of asphalt covered with ceramic granules. This type carries different classes of fire ratings, making it one of the most durable roofs in home building.

• Asphalt fiberglass composition roofing - This is made from fibreglass that is infused with asphalt, then covered with ceramic wrapped granules. It is mainly used in houses or structures which need better-than-average protection against harmful atmospheric elements.

• Metal roofing - As its name implies, this is made of metal. It is primarily used by commercial establishments because it is quite expensive, though there are now homeowners who prefer a metal roof.

• Tile roofing is one of the oldest types used in home building. It can be either clay or concrete, and the tiles come in different styles and finishes. If you plan to install a tile roof, however, you will need extra structural reinforcement to support its heavier weight.

• Wood shingles and shakes are made from different kinds of wood, such as cedar and southern pine redwood. The wood could be left natural, preserved, or fire-treated. Wood shingles and shakes are popular for residential and commercial applications, especially in the Northwest and Midwest United States.
