The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommends the pre-qualification of roofing contractors. They have set some criteria that you can use in pre-qualifying the contractors that will do your roof job. These criteria are the following:
• A good roofing contractor is well established. He must have a permanent office address, office phone and fax number, and of course, business permits and a tax identification number.
• Roofing application changes with the times. The contractor must have enough knowledge both of former and present roofing systems in order to help you decide which type of roof is best for you.
• A good roofing contractor should be affiliated with a local, state, regional, or national industry association. This way you can be assured the contractor is knowledgeable about the latest trends in the industry.
• He should have proof of insurance. He should be able to show you a copy of his insurance certificate that confirms worker’s compensation and general liability coverage.
• His firm should also have suppliers who are licensed and have a good reputation.
• He should offer roofing warranties, which will cover his firm’s workmanship as well as the manufacturer’s warranty.
• A good roofing contractor will offer periodic maintenance inspection throughout the term of the warranty. This will ensure that the project complies with the standards stated in the warranty.
