Why are the fish in my aquarium swimming sideways?

There are many reasons why your fish may be swimming sideways. One is that maybe your pet is near an air pump, which is pushing it to one side. It fights the current made by the pump by flapping its fins on the other side, which may cause it to swim sideways.
Secondly, it may be because one of the fish's fins is hurt or not in good condition. If that is so, your fish may have difficulty flapping the damaged fin and when he flaps the stronger fin it moves the fish sideways.
