There are 37 inhabited islands in the Bahamas and the population as of 2005 was approximately 302,000. The greatest portion of the Bahamian people are descendants of freed slaves.
More than 80% of them are of African origin, mostly from the tribe of Yoruba. The other 20% are of European descent. However, the native inhabitants of the Bahamas are the Lucayans.
