A self-cleaning oven cleans itself by basically burning off any residue inside the oven. Once you select "Clean" and push "Start," the oven locks itself closed until the cleaning process is finished. This is to prevent accidental burns, as the self-cleaning feature heats the oven much hotter than for regular baking.
Though it is a self-cleaning oven, it still needs your attention in order for you to make sure that the cleaning process is working properly, so you should not leave the over unattended while it is cleaning. You will also sometimes need to remove any leftover ashes after the oven has cooled. Just use a damp cloth to do this.
