If the zipper on your backpack is worn out or broken, you can follow some simple steps for replacing it:
(1) Check to see what type of zipper the old one is:
- Conventional zippers are designed having two fabric strips connected at one end and stops on the other end to prevent the slider from running off the zipper.
- Invisible zippers are similar to conventional zippers, having two fabric strips connected at one end, but the zipper tape covers the mechanism of the zipper so it is visible only on its reverse side.
- Separating zippers have bottom stops that allow the separation of fabric tapes, like zippers in jackets.
(2) Learn every part of the zipper to determine which parts are replaceable:
- The tape is the woven cloth or fabric part of the zipper.
- The teeth are the small hook-like pieces the zipper pull runs along to open or close the zipper.
- The coil is a continuous coil located on the tape edge and able to open or close when the zipper pull runs along it. Some zippers use continuous coils instead of individual teeth.
- Top stops are removable or replaceable metal or plastic pieces located at the top of the coil or teeth that stop the zipper pull.
- The bottom stop is found at the base of separating zippers. It cannot be repaired or replaced.
- The zipper pull is the metal or plastic tab that you hold in your fingers when you pull the zipper open or closed.
- A reversible zipper pull can be used to replace a regular zipper pull to create a reversible zipper.
- Add-on zipper pulls are extra tab pieces added onto the existing zipper pull for easier operation of the zipper.
Once you know the right zipper for your backpack, go to a fabric store to buy a replacement zipper of the same type. Some camping and outdoor stores will also replace zippers for you, for a fee.
If the zipper of your backpack is found to be defective at purchase you should go to the store where you bought it and ask for a replacement. This is covered by their warranty service.
