Untreated tap water is generally not harmful to use in an aquarium. However, there is tap water that is treated with chemical agents like chlorine that may harm the fish. You may use any type of water that is not contaminated with any type of chemical.
Your local pet store or aquarium store will have products that will neutralize or remove the chlorine and chemicals from your aquarium's water. Generally, you'll need to put some drops of the product into water in a separate container and leave overnight for a day or two before putting the water into the tank.
If you have salt-water fish, you will have to use sea water for your aquarium or add enough salt to your tap water to make it similar to sea water.
