No. Hiking packs vary in size, style and features. They are made for specific purposes and greatly differ in their construction and features. Backpacks are divided into different categories.
- Waist/hip/fanny/lumbar packs are not officially backpacks but can replace a traditional backpack for shorter day hikes and trips. These are typically just a pouch or two with a belt.
- Hydration packs have bladders with a drinking tube around which the actual backpack has been constructed.
- Day packs refer to backpacks of smaller size. They have straps on the shoulders but no hip belts. They are especially used for short daytime hikes. Some have incorporated a strap on the chest to keep the shoulders steady without leaning because of the pack's weight.
- Midsize packs are used for multiple short hikes in a day. They are perfect for individuals who want to go hike while bringing books or cameras.
- Expedition backpacks were created in larger sizes that enable them to carry enough gear to keep an individual on the trail for weeks.
