Alcoholics have a higher tolerance for alcohol because their body has grown partially immune to the effects of the drug. Alcoholics drink more often, so their tolerance level increases, causing them to need greater and greater quantities of alcohol to get drunk.
People who have built up a high tolerance for alcohol can drink larger amounts without acting intoxicated. Although they may appear normal after drinking a lot, they still suffer serious internal damage, such as liver failure, that cannot be reversed or repaired. The person can also suffer withdrawal symptoms whenever they quit drinking, such as sweating, loss of appetite, convulsions, tremors, jumpiness, hallucinations, and sleep deprivation.
