Alcohol causes addiction because it creates a dependence syndrome on the part of the drinker, caused by a group of behavioral, physiological and cognitive phenomena. Dependence syndrome is characterized by a strong or even overpowering desire to take alcohol, even sometimes returning to the habit after a long period of abstinence. The tolerance level of the alcoholic gradually increases, requiring larger amounts of alcohol before getting drunk and eventually leading to addiction.
