Korsakoff's Syndrome or Korsakoff's Amnesiac Psychosis frequently occurs in people who are either malnourished or have Vitamin B (especially thiamin) deficiency who regularly drink excessive amounts of alcohol. It causes memory loss of present events, and an affected alcoholic will often attempt to compensate for this memory loss with fantastic stories created to cover up his or her inability to remember.
Sometimes it follows the pattern of Delirium Tremens, which can be fatal if the thiamin deficiency is not promptly treated. Delirium Tremens can lead to the development of Wernicke's Encephalopathy, which is manifested by symptoms such as confusion, uncoordinated movements, abnormal movement of the eyes, and reduced ability to feel pain.
