As a neurological disorder, the cerebellum (important in impulse control, emotion and higher cognition) in the brain of patients with ADHD is believed to be smaller than normal. While it is believed to be hereditary, it can also be caused by other factors, such as:
- Accidents that lead to brain injury.
- Smoking and/or drinking of alcohol during the mother's pregnancy. Nicotine can cause hypoxia in the uterus, which may lead to a serious case of brain damage in the offspring.
- Diet. Large amounts of refined sugar and food additives plus a low level of zinc and fatty acids, are believed to be one of the causes of ADHD.
