Alcohol is one of the most abused drugs, acting as a depressant on the central nervous system. It causes slurred speech, drowsiness, euphoria, vomiting, depression, relaxed inhibitions, ataxia, sleep disturbances, loss of motor coordination, and blackouts. It can also reduce the brain's capability to control behavior and impair an individual's ability to perform motor skills like driving. The user may feel sociable or relaxed at first; however, this may be replaced with depression, anger, drowsiness, and/or loss of control, depending on the individual.
These effects vary depending on the individual's capacity for alcohol absorption in the blood, food quantity in the stomach, level of alcohol tolerance, and other such factors. Chronic usage of alcohol can cause hypothermia, memory loss, decreased sex drive, menstrual problems, impotence, damage to kidneys, liver, brain, stomach or intestines, coma, inability to feel pain, susceptibility to other diseases related to alcohol, unacceptable social behavior, insomnia, anxiety, inability to walk, or inability to breathe, in turn causing such serious problems as heart failure, serious withdrawal effects, other drug interactions, death or suicide, and driving while impaired by alcohol.
