A person becomes alcoholic if they exceed the proper dosage for alcohol. Adult men can drink moderate amounts of alcohol, averaging up to two drinks a day, while one drink a day is considered moderate for adult women and older men. One drink of alcohol is equivalent to a 12 ounce bottle of wine cooler or beer, one 5 ounce glass of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits.
