If a woman drinks excessive amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, it can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, which includes such problems as birth defects, heart defects, mental retardation, facial deformities, small circumference of the head, and retarded growth in the fetus. Pregnant women and even those who are hoping to get pregnant should abstain from alcohol to prevent these problems.
