A moderate amount of alcohol can help protect the heart; however, if the amount is excessive (more than three drinks a day) it has a poisonous effect on the heart. Excessive alcohol intake can cause heart damage, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, strokes, and alcoholic cardiomyopathy, which is a weakened and enlarged heart.
Alcohol can also interact with both prescription and non-prescription drugs, so mixing it with many types of medication can lead to severe unwanted effects.
Alcohol increases the risk of lung, liver, and breast cancer and contributes to such diseases as cirrhosis, hepatitis, pancreatitis, malnutrition, ulcers, and fetal alcohol syndrome. Over time, alcohol can destroy brain tissues in the cerebellum, leading to irreversible damage to the brain and causing permanent problems with unsteady walk, dulled thinking, and slurred speech.
