Teenage alcoholism is very common, beginning as young as 14. Teenagers sometimes turn to alcohol to express general adolescent feelings, including problem behaviors associated with impulsiveness, unconventionality and sensation seeking. This could also involve various psychiatric problems such as anxiety, depression, antisocial personality disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Adolescents also incorporate alcohol in planning or attempting suicide.
Some other factors contributing to alcoholism in teenagers are peer acceptance and lack of parental monitoring, support and communication, as well as a parent's rejection or harsh discipline.
