There is an American League and National League because baseball is played with two different sets of rules and is two different games in the case of these two leagues.
The National League is the older League. It was formed in 1876, while the American League was founded in 1900. The National League retains the rule that the pitcher must be in the batting lineup, while the American League adopted the Designated Hitter rule, where someone else can fill in for the pitcher.
The American League game is generally based on power, with emphasis on home runs, and the National League game is more pitching-oriented, with more focus on offensive running.
