There are no exact answers about what causes depression. However, more than one thing may be involved. Consider the following:
*Emotional stress, physical effort, or mental tension without appropriate rest or enough sleep. Tension can exhaust the nervous system and deprive the body of nutrients important for the nervous system to function correctly.
*Is there a family history of depression? Heredity is thought to be one of the causes of depression.
*Physical disease can also cause depression.
*An unhealthy lifestyle -- little exercise, lots of stimulants such as coffee or tea, an unbalanced diet.
*Pregnancy and giving birth is physically and emotionally tiring, and may exhaust the body of certain nutrients, resulting in depression.
