To throw a curve ball, the pitcher snaps his wrist downward at the moment of release, for the ball to roll off the top of his hand. Since the pitcher put a twist on it at the last moment, it causes the ball to spin diagonally or from side to side. That last-second spin causes the air around the ball to travel faster at the bottom of the ball’s surface than it does at the top, which creates a "curved" flight path.
