These three issues are not associated with each other. The following explanations can help differentiate grief and mood swings from depression:
• Depression is not just a mood disorder. Depressed people are usually lacking energy in each sense -- physical, psychological, and mental. People who say they are always tired may be depressed even if they are not sad and suffering emotionally. The main symptoms may be loss of desire for food, sleeplessness, backaches, headaches, upset stomach, constipation, and constant exhaustion.
• Grief is a common feeling especially after the death of a loved one. It is a mixture of sorrow, strong emotion, and confusion that comes from losing someone important to you. This is actually the response to loss.
• Mood swings are a severe change of mood.
