There are several types of ceiling tiles available that are made of various materials and serve different purposes, including:
- Acoustical ceiling tile- This type of ceiling tile is good for soundproofing and noise reduction purposes. It is made up of spun mineral wool fiber that is mixed with starch, which is responsible for its soundproofing element. It is available with a wide array of noise reduction capabilities. Moreover, the sound absorption rate varies from material to material.
- Tin ceiling tile- This type of ceiling tile is manufactured from various types of metals, including includes brass, steel, copper, and tin. The metal normally comes in large rolls and is stamped with different designs. These metal sheets are cut and used as ceilings in residential and commercial structures.
- Ceilume ceiling tile- This type of ceiling tile is made of UV-stabilized 0.13 vinyl plastic material. It is classified as Class I (fire-rated) which can be used under lighting fixtures as well as for standard ceiling sprinkler systems rated at 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, it can be easily removed without surface degradation, in most cases. Since it is made of vinyl, it is not susceptible to water damage and it does not grow mold or the bacteria that are the major causes of poor indoor air quality. Also, there is no asbestos in this type of ceiling tile.
- Mineral fiber ceiling tile - This type of ceiling tile is made of mineral fibers. Like Ceilume tile, it is classified as Class I (fire-rated) and designed to sit on top of ceiling sprinkler systems. However, since it is opaque, it cannot be used under lighting fixtures. You will need to purchase separate lighting panels to install within the grid. Also, it is susceptible to water damage and contains asbestos.
