Water stains are those ugly brown stains on your ceiling caused by leaks in your roof or when condensation causes the water to drip from your roof onto the ceiling tiles. You may be able to remove these water stains on your ceiling; however, keep in mind that you must first determine and eliminate the cause. If your roof is leaking or there is a constant build-up of condensed water, you must first fix it before removing stains from your ceiling.

If the water stains are just light, you can remove them with undiluted laundry bleach. Before applying bleach to the affected area, however, be sure to place protective coverings over your floor, carpet, and furniture. You should also wear rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes. Once you are properly prepared, you may use a sponge or cloth soaked in full-strength bleach and wipe it over the affected area until the stain is removed.

If water stains have caused severe discoloring of your ceiling, however, rubbing with bleach will not do the job. You will need to reseal and repaint your ceiling. You will need the following materials:

- Masking tape;

- Latex primer;

- Latex paint;

- Pigmented shellac sealer; and

- Paint brushes, pads, or rollers.

In order to protect the crown moldings, cover them with masking tape. Make sure that the tape will not pull off the finish. Then, brush the sealer over the stain to completely cover it. If you want to be sure of having a uniform color when finished, you may opt to seal the whole ceiling. If the water stain is really severe, you may opt for a second coat.

Using paint pads, brushes, or rollers, cover the ceiling tiles with the primer. Since it is porous, you need to have a primer coat. When dry, you may apply the paint over the primer coat. You can now remove the masking tape and replace any ceiling fixtures that you removed prior to the repair.
