Cerebral palsy is categorized as athetoid, ataxic, spastic, and mixed. These types suggest the kind of movement distress shown by the patient.
- Athetoid – also known as dyskinetic cerebral palsy, which shows writhing, slow, and uncontrolled actions; ranging from 10 to 20 percent of all cases
- Ataxic – characterized by depth sensitivity as well as poor balance and coordination; ranging from 5 to 10 percent of cases
- Spastic – characterized by permanent and stiff contractions of muscles; ranging from 50 to 75 percent of cases
- Mixed – a combination of the above types; about 10 percent of cases
