When a child reaches the age of 5, he is considered old enough and large enough to fit an adult safety belt. For a safety belt to fit properly, the lap belt must fit snugly and properly across the upper thighs. However, in modern cars the shoulder strap must also be considered. Since it should cross over the shoulder and chest, it is suggested that a 5-year-old child not use a seatbelt. Rather, he should be in a car seat or booster seat for a few more years. The weight and height of the child, rather than age, is generally the deciding factor as to whether the child should use a seatbelt.
