There are really no exact guidelines in choosing the area rug size. A good way to know the correct size is to extend bed linens to estimate the rug size that you want. Make some measurement, and select the closest available size.
In your dining area, get the measurement of your table and add a minimum of four extra feet to the width and the length of the table. The four extra feet will still cover the chair legs when the chairs are pulled back from the table.
