Both dogs and cats can be excellent pets for families with young children. However, be cautious about certain breeds of dogs, including pit bulls, rottweilers and German shepherds, because they are accountable for almost all fatal dog bites.
Larger dog breeds like Doberman pinschers, Great Danes and Dalmatians, are also not safe for children because they grow to weigh more than fifty pounds.
Dogs and cats can also carry infections, some of which are contagious to humans. Children should be strictly supervised in the presence of animals. Don't let them kiss their pets, and teach them to wash their hands after playing with a pet.
