The terms horizontal and vertical refer to the way the bamboo was cut (with or across the grain) to make the flooring. Horizontal flooring retains the look of bamboo in the individual tiles made. The nodes of the bamboo can still be seen in horizontal grain flooring. Vertical bamboo flooring, on the other hand, is the opposite of horizontal. The nodes of unprocessed bamboo can no longer be seen in vertical grain flooring.
