Can I just use a regular backpack to carry my laptop?

A regular backpack is not advisable because it your computer will not be held firmly enough inside it and can flop around. There are backpacks that are specially made for carrying laptops, and these are acceptable for the job, though not usually as good as a briefcase-style laptop case. But you should not use a regular backpack to carry a laptop.
