In a 2002 survey conducted by Vault.com, an employment research site, 26% of the 239 respondents (mostly HR professionals and recruiters) said that an online bachelor's degree is as credible as a traditional bachelor's degree. Sixty one percent said that it isn't as credible as the traditional degree but is acceptable. The rest said that an online bachelor's degree is not acceptable or credible.
While some employers have become more progressive in their thinking, many are still hesitant about taking on someone with a degree obtained online. Some younger, more progressive employers wouldn't care about a degree obtained online, because it is, after all, an indication of the person's ambition and his desire to improve himself and learn new things. And because distance learning is becoming more common these days, many employers are now less discriminating with their applicants, allowing consideration of applicants with online degrees.
In the end, it all boils down to how you defend and package yourself. A tough, conservative boss might put you in the top position, even with an online degree, if you show him what that degree has taught you. Of course, you need to make sure that your school and that degree of yours is accredited and not just another rip-off gimmick.
