Online learning's primary attraction is flexibility. It allows you to work from the comforts of your home, at your convenience, at your own pace. A busy professional need not quit his job while finishing an MBA degree online. A housewife can still attend to her family and home while working on her masters degree online.
It also saves you a lot of money. Tuition is less than a regular university; no transportation expense is required; fewer requirements and projects to spend money on. Some distance learning programs even offer scholarships for qualified students.
Furthermore, you control the pace of your education. You can speed up on topics that are easy for you and slow down on those that are more complicated or have more requirements.
On the other hand, some people believe that distance learning deprives the student of the social interaction that a regular school program offers. Because learning is done virtually through chatrooms and bulletin boards, there are fewer opportunities for classroom discussions and interaction with other students.
Also, some distance learners easily lose interest or motivation because of the limited social interaction, and some students have a tendency to procrastinate when they control their own schedule.
