The maximum height that a helium balloon can reach will depend on the size and the materials used while it was in storage. Party balloons that use simple materials will only float a few hundred feet, but a weather balloon, which uses much stronger material, can reach up to 40 kilometers in altitude before it disintegrates.
Balloons pop in high altitudes because the air pressure drops, allowing the helium inside the balloon to expand and stretch the balloon until it bursts.
