Basically, there are two types of college accreditation. The first is institutional accreditation, which is granted to a school that has met the standards and requirements of the accrediting organization. In this type, all aspects of the school's operation are assessed, from the program offerings and curriculum to the administration and faculty to the facilities and other services of the school. An institutional accreditation signifies high quality.
Institutional accreditation is further classified into two types: regional and national. These two types of accreditation are dependent on the evaluator or the accrediting agency, which can be a regional or a national organization.
The second type of college accreditation is a specialized, professional or program accreditation. This is designed for specific departments, units, or programs of a particular college or university. It assesses a particular aspect of the program, department, unit, or field of study. It can zero in on specific fields like nursing, engineering, or law.
