For one thing, photographs should be stored in a place where the temperature and humidity are controlled. Extreme temperatures and dampness will damage photos. Therefore, attics, basements, garages, and public storage units are not the best places to store photographs. The photos may become brittle and break, the colors might fade or change, and there is a possibility of mildew, as well, if there is any moisture present.
One of the best ways to store photos is in albums, if they are of archival quality. Check with scrapbook suppliers to find archival quality albums. You can also put photos in photo storage boxes that prevent contaminants entering the box. Just avoid storing these boxes in damp places.
If you have a digital camera, you can save your photos on a CD by using a CD burner. You can also burn as many copies of the CD you want. Then label it and store it in a CD case. You can have your photos reprinted anytime you want.
